Sleeping suspended on the wall
A night on the wall means spending the evening and the night in a portaledge — a platform tent hung from the cliff face. You eat above the void, you watch the sun set over the Tarn Gorges, you fall asleep under the stars, and you wake up facing the valley. Florian, a State-certified instructor (Moniteur d'État), handles all the safety, logistics and gear. Several spots are possible within the Tarn Gorges, depending on the package, the group and the weather.
In both packages — the evening on its own as well as the full night — you'll need a reasonable level of fitness. Count on a 20- to 30-minute climb up a genuine slope to reach the wall: it helps to be at least a bit of a walker / hiker. You don't need to be an elite athlete, but the approach really does go uphill.

“The night on the wall is the experience I love sharing most. We head out in the late afternoon, we set everything up together, we watch the sun drop over the Gorges, and then — total silence. Nothing left but you, the wall and the stars. It's rare, and it's exactly what I want you to live.”

Frequently asked questions — Night on the Wall
Do I need to be fit?
A reasonable level of fitness is enough — you don't need to be a seasoned athlete. In both packages (the evening on its own as well as the full night), you have to reach the wall via a 20- to 30-minute approach walk up a genuine slope. If you're at least a bit of a walker / hiker, you'll be fine.
If you're unsure about your level, get in touch with Florian: he'll tell you whether the outing is right for you.
How does Florian keep things safe?
Florian checks every stage of the set-up and ensures your complete safety throughout the night. You can even be there during the rigging if you arrive early enough, and see for yourself how meticulous the set-up is.
As a State-certified instructor specialising in Adventure Terrain, Florian is responsible for every technical aspect: anchoring, lifeline, certified PPE, and full supervision of the activity.
How is the technical safety of the portaledge ensured?
The portaledge is secured by a double, redundant anchoring system: two independent anchor points, each able to hold several tonnes. This technique meets the international standards for committing climbing.

I'm afraid of heights — is it doable?
Good news: several spots are possible for setting up the portaledge. You can spend the night just two metres from the drop, on a small ledge. Of course it's up high, but there's no sense of the void. You're safely clipped to the wall, in a reassuring environment.
One important and often overlooked point: the portaledge creates a real bubble of safety. Once the structure is up, it's like a floor — a genuine visual reference. When you're sitting on it, that feeling of vertigo is much, much less.
And with the tent fly fitted over the top, you only see what you want to see: your whole field of vision closes in on your little "square". It's the visuals that do everything: the reference all the way down to the ground disappears, contrary to what you might imagine.
Plenty of people who are scared of heights have lived this experience — and come away delighted.
What about going to the loo during the night?
Good question (and a fair one!). Each set-up is reachable via a small ledge (a natural terrace) close to the portaledge.
Before the night, I strongly recommend going to the toilet — it's so much more relaxing to have an empty bladder for a good night's sleep!
But if it gets urgent in the middle of the night, no panic: you can get back to the little terrace via a secured lifeline. A dry toilet is provided there to protect the natural site.
In any case, Florian stays present and on hand if you need help.
And the weather? Can it be cancelled?
Yes — safety comes first. In the event of strong wind (>40 km/h), thunderstorms or driving rain, the experience is postponed to another date free of charge. Florian checks the actual forecast 48 hours before and confirms the evening before.
A little fine rain in the morning is fine — the portaledge roof is waterproof.
What technical level do I need?
The Sunset and Night on the Wall packages require no prior climbing experience. Florian checks your profile at the time of booking and tailors the approach walk accordingly.
The Big Wall package is reserved for self-sufficient climbers — the exact level and conditions to be confirmed directly with Florian.
Can it be combined with the Via Ferrata?
Yes — it's even one of our signature outings! The Complete Adventure Pack combo strings together a via ferrata in the afternoon (3 h) and then the vertical bivouac from 7 pm, with waking up on site the next morning. Request a quote for this package.
