The dry canyon of the Tarn Gorges

Adrenaline and thrills in a limestone canyon

The Pas de Soucy canyon is a route that's sportier than Verrières, yet still fun and playful. Once you enter the dry canyon, there's no turning back ! Florian stays close by throughout the descent, focusing on safety and building your confidence so you can make the most of this fine adventure.

You'll tackle slabs, drops and abseils in complete safety, kitted out with a helmet, harness and lanyards. With no water and no slippery sections, this activity delivers adrenaline and thrills while letting you explore spectacular vertical landscapes. Carved into the limestone of the Tarn Gorges, the canyon forms a genuine succession of pale slabs, polished drops and hemmed-in corridors where the light plays on the rock.

Technical specifics

Abseiling in the Pas de Soucy canyon

The route begins with a first 15-metre abseil. It's the chance to learn how to manage your speed, your position and your footholds to keep your balance throughout the descent.

Florian keeps you safe with an extra rope, ready to arrest any fall should you let go.

You'll then move on to a second, more impressive abseil, topping out at 35 metres. Two shorter abseils, around ten metres each, round off the progression gently.

Florian adapts his guidance to each participant's profile and level. Several descent techniques are possible depending on the situation, but the choice always rests with the instructor to guarantee optimal safety.

Complete hiking & abseiling gear

Gear

Before setting off into the canyon, everyone is fitted with a certified harness and helmet. The descender lets you precisely control your speed on the rope, while the lanyards secure your connection to the anchors and lifelines. Florian checks every harness before departure.

Abseil rope

Rope

The rope is the centrepiece of the abseil : rigged at the top of each drop, it bears the entire load and, paired with the descender, lets you meter out the descent metre by metre. It's what secures every vertical section of the canyon.

Lifeline and handrail

Lifeline

On exposed sections, a lifeline — also known as a handrail — acts as a continuous point of support : you clip onto it with your lanyards to move horizontally in safety, without relying on the descent rope.

“The Pas de Soucy is the hiking & abseiling that stays with you. Once you're at the bottom of the first 15-metre abseil, you realise there's no way back — that's what makes the adventure so intense. The 35-metre second abseil is often the biggest thrill of the outing. But everything is secured; I'm there for every manoeuvre. The goal is for you to come away with a big smile and a story to tell.”

Frequently asked questions — Pas de Soucy

From what age can you do the Pas de Soucy canyon?

From age 8. The Pas de Soucy is sportier than Verrières (abseils up to 35 m, a “no turning back” canyon). It suits children who are comfortable with exposure and able to follow instructions. For younger ones, we switch to the Verrières hiking & abseiling (from age 5).

Do I need to have abseiled before?

Not required — the level suits beginners and experienced alike. Florian teaches you the manoeuvres at the briefing, then the first 15 m abseil serves as the learning curve. An extra rope keeps you safe should you let go.

How many abseils are there and how high?

4 abseils in total: 15 m (the first, for learning), 35 m (the most impressive), then 2 abseils of around ten metres to round things off gently. Depending on your profile and the situation, Florian picks the most suitable descent technique to keep you safe.

What gear is provided? What should I bring?

Florian provides all the gear: helmet, harness, lanyards, descender, ropes. Suitable for children and adults alike.

You bring: sportswear with trainers (or approach shoes), a backpack, 1 L of water, energy bars, a cap for the approach walk.

What's the difference with the Verrières hiking & abseiling?

Verrières is more family-friendly (from age 5, 7-8 abseils max 8 m, a semi-underground canyon in limestone tufa). Pas de Soucy is sportier (from age 8, 4 abseils including one of 35 m, a “no turning back” dry canyon in a spectacular limestone setting).

Is it aquatic — is there water?

It's not aquatic canyoning. The Pas de Soucy is a dry canyon — you abseil down drops in a limestone setting but with no water and no slippery sections. The adventure focuses on vertical sensations and exploring the surroundings.

What happens if the weather is bad?

Light rain or wind aren't a problem. In the event of a storm, however, the outing is cancelled and rescheduled free of charge where possible.

How many people maximum?

Florian guides up to 10 people per outing. For a larger group, we arrange several time slots — get in touch and we'll adapt.
