Verrières — a family introduction to abseiling
A semi-underground canyon carved into the limestone — two moods, from family-friendly to more vertiginous
- 3 hr 30 min
- From age 5
- 7 to 8 abseils (max 8 m)
- From €38/person
An unusual descent through limestone and tufa
A perfect outing to discover abseiling gently, in a cool, quiet corner of nature. Verrières is two moods in a single site : a family-friendly, playful route, and a more vertiginous variant for those who want a little more commitment. After an approach walk of around fifteen minutes, you skirt the start of the canyon — that's where the adventure begins.
Particularly suited to children from age 5, the canyon features 7 to 8 abseils with a maximum height of 8 metres, all optional depending on the conditions and on each person's level. The small abseils follow one after another and are a real hit with younger ones, while safety cables secure your progress between each passage. The route runs through a small semi-underground canyon carved into the limestone formations known as "tufa" — light deposits formed by the build-up of plants and microscopic algae around water sources.
Its finest asset? Because it is half underground, the canyon stays naturally cool even at the height of summer. There's no swimming and no aquatic course here — just a welcome mineral coolness that makes it the ideal activity for heatwave afternoons, when it's too hot to climb elsewhere. And because the site stays under the radar, you almost always have it to yourselves, in a calm and intimate atmosphere.
Technical details
The descent of the Verrières canyon stands out for its alternation of abseils, short walking sections and rock steps, in a semi-underground limestone setting.
The abseils, roughly 4 to 8 metres maximum, are fitted with safety cables to secure your progress, and can be bypassed depending on your level or how you feel.
The route lets you discover going vertical in complete safety, learn the basic moves of canyoning and get familiar with the gear (harness, descender, helmet).
Its short length, its often dry streambed and its limestone formations make it an unusual descent, accessible to children and beginners, blending learning, observation and thrills in a unique natural environment.
Equipment
Helmet : fitted to every head, from the smallest to the tallest.
Harness : comfortable for moving around with confidence.
Descender : the device that controls your descent on the rope.
Lanyards : to stay safely clipped to the safety cables.
Rope
When abseiling, the rope lets you descend smoothly down the canyon. It takes your full weight and, with the descender, you control the speed yourself — a move that's quickly mastered, even by children.
Safety line
The safety line (or safety cable) is a cable you clip onto to cross slightly exposed passages risk-free, hands free. Florian sets it up just before each obstacle.

“Verrières is my favourite family outing. The children arrive a little intimidated by the abseiling, and after 30 minutes they don't want to stop. The canyon is cool, unusual, semi-underground — it's a real adventure that stays accessible. For parents who want to share a first taste of going vertical with their children in complete safety, it's the perfect spot.”

Frequently asked questions — Verrières
From what age can you do the Verrières hiking & abseiling outing?
From age 5. Verrières is specifically suited to children thanks to its short abseils (max 8 m), the safety cables set up by the instructor just before each obstacle, and the option to bypass certain passages as you wish. Florian is very patient and adapts to every profile.
Do you need previous abseiling experience?
Not at all. This is an introduction — Florian teaches you how to use the descender and the lanyards, and how to move along the safety cables. The first abseil is always done under his direct supervision, and you then progress at your own pace.
How many abseils are there and how high?
7 to 8 abseils in total, from 4 to 8 metres maximum. All are optional and can be bypassed depending on the conditions and on each person's level. It's progressive, reassuring, and leaves plenty of room for play and discovery.
What gear is provided? What should I bring?
Florian provides all the gear: helmet, harness, lanyards, descender, ropes. Suited to children and adults alike.
You bring: sportswear with trainers (the ground is limestone and sometimes damp), a backpack, 1 L of water, cereal bars, and a cap for the approach walk.
How long does the outing last?
Allow 3 hr 30 min on site: technical briefing + kitting up (~30 min), approach walk (~15 min), the run of abseils (~2 hr), and the way back. Florian sets the pace to suit the group — the goal is to have a great time, not to break records.
Is it aquatic — is there water?
The Verrières hiking & abseiling outing is not an aquatic activity. It's a dry canyon: you abseil down in a semi-underground limestone setting without getting wet. After heavy rain there may be a little water in the canyon, but it stays very light. For a more sporty outing, see the Pas de Soucy hiking & abseiling outing.
What happens if the weather is bad?
Light rain or wind is no problem. However, in the event of a storm, the outing is cancelled and rescheduled free of charge where possible.
How many people maximum?
Florian guides up to 10 people per outing. For a larger group, we set up several time slots — get in touch and we'll adapt.
