Adventure Terrain (Terrain d'Aventure)- 3-day course
- Max 4 people
- Grade 5a-b min
- From €400/person
The original spirit of climbing — placing your own protection
Adventure Terrain (Terrain d'Aventure), or "Trad", is the art of climbing while placing your own protection in the rock. Unlike sport climbing, you can choose the line that inspires you and let the rock and your instinct guide you.
In the Caroux massif, in the heart of the Gorges d'Héric, the gneiss sculpted by time offers cracks, slabs and arêtes perfect for learning and progressing in complete safety. This experience is best lived as part of a minimum 3-day course.
The 3-day programme
A structured progression to take you from the fundamentals to multi-pitch self-sufficiency — each day prepares the next.
-
D1
Review & technical fundamentals
The essential basics of Adventure Terrain: review of safety manipulations, specialist gear (cams, nuts, slings), and hands-on practice on the rock.
- Understanding how protection works
- Building reliable anchors (equalisation, redundancy)
- Moderate-grade routes (up to 5c max)
- Precise placements and technical mastery
-
D2
Consolidation & managing your progress
Reinforcing what you've learnt and building gradual self-sufficiency on short multi-pitch routes (usually 2 pitches) — combining climbing, placing protection and building anchors in real situations.
- Route reading and rope-drag management
- Communication within the rope team
- Overall organisation of an ascent
- Safe, considered practice
-
D3
Putting it into practice on a multi-pitch
A major route (200 to 300 m) calling for sustained progression and full route management. Each rope team climbs self-sufficiently under Florian's supervision.
- A 200 to 300 m route, several pitches
- Placing protection in real conditions
- Full management of the route
- Final validation of the techniques learnt
Technical specifics
Three skills at the heart of the course — Florian passes them on step by step, from the briefing to self-sufficiency.
Placing protection
The strength of your anchors depends directly on the quality of your placements. Learning to place cams, nuts and wires correctly means acquiring the right reflexes to move with confidence.
Rope management & route reading
Moving smoothly, avoiding excessive rope drag, choosing the safest line. Identifying protection placements and the key passages for a safe ascent.
Anchor equalisation
An essential technique for securing your anchors: linking several anchor points to spread the load. Multi-point equalisation, multi-directional anchors, anchors under load — all these nuances are important to practise under supervision.

"The Caroux is my home crag. The gneiss here is solid, rough, perfectly sculpted for placing your own protection. Over 3 days, there's time to pass on everything: placing cams, equalising anchors, reading the rock. And on day 3, when the rope team links up its first 200 m route on its own — that's real climbing."

Frequently asked questions — Caroux course
What level do I need for the Adventure Terrain course?
You need a minimum grade of 5a-5b in sport climbing, meaning you're comfortable on a top-rope and have already led. The course is run mainly on routes up to 5c max, to prioritise technical precision over pure difficulty.
What exactly is "Adventure Terrain" or "Trad"?
It's the original spirit of climbing: you place your own protection in the rock (cams, nuts, slings), unlike sport climbing where the bolts are already in place. You choose your line, read the rock, and build your own anchor. It's a complete school of self-sufficiency.
Why a 3-day course and not a single day?
Trad can't be discovered in a day. You need time to absorb the manipulations and gradually reach self-sufficiency on a multi-pitch. The programme is built for that: D1 fundamentals, D2 consolidation, D3 putting it into practice on a 200-300 m multi-pitch.
Where can I stay during the 3 days?
The village of Mons-la-Trivalle (Hérault) offers several options for accommodation (gîtes, campsites, B&Bs) right next to the start of the routes. Florian can recommend the best options for your budget — just ask him when you book.
Is the Trad gear provided?
Yes, Florian provides the full Trad rack: cams, nuts, wires, slings, quickdraws, ropes, helmets, harnesses and belay devices. If you have your own gear in good condition (PPE up to date), you can bring it — see the "Personal gear" section.
Why is the Adventure Terrain course held at the Caroux?
Because the Caroux massif is THE reference adventure terrain in the south of France: massive gneiss, perfect cracks, lightly bolted, a wild atmosphere. It's easily reached from Béziers (~45 min), Montpellier (~1 h 15) or the wider Mediterranean area. It's Florian's home crag for passing on this style of climbing.
What happens if the weather is bad?
Light rain or wind aren't a problem. In a thunderstorm, however, the outing is cancelled and postponed free of charge where possible.
